Ring sizing for large knuckles

If a ring that fits the base of your finger will not go over your knuckle — or one that passes the knuckle spins once it is on — you need two measurements, not one.

Measure the base and the knuckle separately

  1. Measure where the ring will sit, at the base of the finger.
  2. Measure over the widest part of the knuckle, with the finger slightly bent as it would be when sliding a ring on.
  3. Enter both. Ring Measure™ keeps them as separate values and never averages them together — an average would describe neither place.

How the difference is classified

  • Normal: up to 1.3 mm of circumference larger than the base. No knuckle adjustment.
  • Elevated: up to 3.8 mm larger. The engine records ELEVATED_KNUCKLE and may lean the order size up so the ring can pass the knuckle.
  • Large: more than 3.8 mm (around one and a half US sizes). Recorded as LARGE_KNUCKLE; FitGuard™ is likely to recommend professional confirmation.

A knuckle reading smaller than the base is treated as a likely measurement error and you will be asked to check it. These thresholds are internal working values and have not been validated against real hands.

Options a jeweller can offer

With a large difference, the best fit is often not a standard ring at all. Jewellers can add sizing beads or a spring insert, fit a hinged shank, or recommend a comfort-fit profile that passes the knuckle more easily. That is why we stop short of a single size for large differences.
