How to measure ring size accurately at home

Nothing below will guarantee a fit. What it will do is get you a measurement you can trust, and tell you honestly when you cannot trust it.

Five rules that matter more than the method

  1. Measure the right finger. Left and right hands differ, and so does the dominant hand.
  2. Measure twice, at least. Two readings that disagree tell you more than one reading that looks confident.
  3. Measure at a normal temperature. Cold hands measure small, warm hands measure large.
  4. Measure the knuckle too. The ring has to pass the knuckle and then stay put at the base.
  5. Describe the ring. A 8 mm comfort-fit band and a 2 mm plain band are not the same size on the same finger.

The methods, honestly

Physical ring sizer

Good for: The strongest at-home method. A sizer behaves like a real ring: it has to pass the knuckle and settle at the base.

Watch out: Cheap plastic sizers are usually narrow, so a wide band will still fit differently.

Measuring an existing ring with a ruler

Good for: Very reliable when the ring is round and genuinely fits the finger you are sizing.

Watch out: A bent or oval ring cannot be measured this way, and a ring worn on another finger is not a substitute.

On-screen sizing with a calibrated screen (Beta)

Good for: Useful when you have a ring but no ruler. Calibration uses a standard payment card, which is 85.6 mm wide everywhere.

Watch out: Depends entirely on the calibration being right. Zoom, rotation or a different display invalidates it. Not validated on real devices in this build.

Direct diameter or circumference

Good for: Straightforward if you already have a measurement in millimetres from a reliable source.

Watch out: Diameter and circumference are easy to mix up. We check for that and stop you if the number looks like the other kind.

A size you already know

Good for: A jeweller's measurement is strong evidence and saves you repeating it.

Watch out: A size someone told you, or a guess, is not evidence. We weight it accordingly.

Paper or string Quick Estimate

Good for: Available to everyone with no equipment at all.

Watch out: Paper stretches, string compresses, and both give a reading that is easily half a size out. Treat it as a starting point only.

When to stop and ask a jeweller

Ask a professional when the ring cannot be resized, when the purchase is final sale, custom or engraved, when the maker uses its own sizing system, or when your own readings disagree by more than about half a size. FitGuard™ will tell you when any of these apply.
